Today
Five years ago today seems like a lifetime ago. Actually two lifetimes ago. I remember waking up that morning not being able to understand what I was seeing but knowing it was important and that I needed to tell my Dad about it. The whole day just sits with me in such a surreal way that I don't think any of us can explain but all understand.
Being here now, I don't want to say that I understand it anymore or that I have some new found perspective on it all. But I have talked with many people who were here that day. From watching it unfold on a roof top in Brooklyn to standing at the base of the towers when the first plane hit. I cannot imagine either.
I'd been to ground zero before and it had impact but not what I thought it would be. Once again it's difficult to explain or take in. But a few months ago some guys at work had a little get together at their new place in the financial district. For some reason when I hit fourteenth street I decided I could walk from there. It ended up being a lot more of a walk than I imagined but it was worth it. I walked straight down the road until I couldn't walk anymore. I came to the WTC. It was late on Saturday night, rainy and no one was there. I took up on the north side walk way and tried to take it in. I've never felt smaller in my life. For the longest time there seemed to be no sound at all. I stood there for about twenty minutes before I decided to keep going. I still don't have a grasp on that night.
Before the word Blog was a word I was reading something called The Links. It's a daily column about the NBA that "links" to and comments on articles around the net. Lang Whitaker is the man behind them and a resident New Yorker. Today he reposted what he wrote five years ago with some added commentary. It was the best thing I read or saw today so I wanted to share.
