Friends with a room

Danny was kind enough to let me tag along to the Cooper-Hewitt this afternoon. It was pretty awesome. Two quotes from the day.

I had no idea silverware could be cool.

I want to be friends with this room.

Of the three current exhibits we started out with the smallest which was fittingly the scale staircases. They were interesting. The best part were the architectural renderings of the stairs and even better still were the signatures on them, no one writes like that anymore. Next up was the design of the tools of the table exhibit. In other words; spoons, forks, knives. Weird right? But ultimately very cool. Did you know that people used to take silverware with them because it wasn't provided, or that they were viewed as a status symbol? I didn't either. There were some amazing pieces on display but my favorite was the little section on airplane utensils, you'd have to see it to get it I guess. Also did you know that Thomas Jefferson wrote the first American recipe for ice cream? Yeah I didn't know that either. The final exhibit was some featured works of Frederic Church, Winslow Homer, and Thomas Moran. Winslow Homer easily being the name of note out of the three. Dude was trumped easily by Thomas Moran though. Whether it was his oil work, water color or straight ink and paper he simply killed it. Absolutely brilliant work. There was one piece he did of Niagara Falls with a quill that I could have stared at for hours based on the lines alone, his control of thicks and thins were insane. The stand out moment though came from a room. Not what was in the room but the room itself. It was a small atrium that I won't even try to describe but it prompted me to say the words above.

A few quick things of interest. This is amazing and might go a long way in helping someone understand why I enjoy sneakers so much and why this man and Todd McFarlane are the only autographs I've ever felt the need to get. The art direction on the movie is great as well, watch all the way to the credits, the animations are sick. Mark Cuban, the lovable owner of the Dallas Mavericks gives his thoughts on the acquisition of Youtube by Google and in the process tells you how pretty much all media content on the web can be yours for free. I hate country music as much as the next sane person but this has Netflix written all over it.

Finally, tonight is Midnight Madness and the NBA starts up at the end of the month. Welcome to the excitement that is my life.
